Airbus Beluga
/AIR-bus buh-LOO-guh/ n.- 1. A large-capacity cargo aircraft manufactured by Airbus SE, distinguished by a fuselage so dramatically widened above the main deck that the forward section reads as an afterthought bolted onto a whale; esp. one photographed in flight, where the dorsal bulge catches raking light and the silhouette resolves into something a taxonomist would hesitate to classify.
- 2. colloq. She is built from the cockpit back, and everything forward of the wing root is just the excuse. The fuselage does not taper so much as it eventually runs out of ambition.
"The Airbus Beluga cleared the tarmac at Toulouse and the control tower went quiet for a moment, because a thiccc cargo hauler in a climbing attitude, viewed from the rear quarter, is less an aircraft and more a weather event with a tail number."
From Airbus SE (Franco-German aerospace consortium, est. 1970, Toulouse) + beluga, from Russian beluga, denoting both the white sturgeon and the beluga whale, derived from bely ('white'). The aircraft was named for the whale. The whale was not consulted, but would have approved.

Ruling ADMITTED ON APPEAL

The dorsal bulge is real, documentable, and frankly unarguable. The whale naming itself earns nothing. Margie overruled me. The file reflects my position.
In the margin

The entry notes the control tower went quiet. I respect any object that silences air traffic professionals mid-sentence.
