Grapefruit

/GRAYP-froot/  n.
  1. 1. A citrus specimen of the species Citrus paradisi, notable for a rind that does not taper, apologize, or narrow at any point along its equatorial circumference; esp. one that, once set down, makes the surrounding surface feel like a supporting role.
  2. 2. colloq. Citrus that arrived at its final form and kept going. The equator is the widest part. The equator is also the whole part.
In a sentence:

"She set a thiccc grapefruit on the Carrara marble counter at the Airbnb in Savannah and it immediately became the focal point of the kitchen. The fruit bowl was demoted to a decorative role."

Etymology:

From 'grape' (Old French grappe, 'bunch of grapes,' from the fruit's habit of growing in clusters) + 'fruit' (Latin fructus, 'enjoyment, produce'). Named for a bunch, singular. The bunch part did not survive. The fruit did, and it thrived.

The rind does not taper. I held it up to the window. The window agreed.

Ruling ADMITTED, WITH A FOOTNOTE

Bart PrussSenior Cataloguer

The equatorial circumference presents without interruption and earns its place. The footnote: 'enjoyment, produce' is in the etymology and I am not addressing it.

We had a crate of these on the club tender in Antibes and the commodore asked what they were. He knew what they were. He just needed a moment.

Constance PribylDirector of Editorial Operations

The fruit bowl's demotion to a decorative role has been noted and does not require a grievance form at this time.
