Butternut Squash

/BUT-er-nut skwosh/  n.
  1. 1. A winter squash (Cucurbita moschata) of characteristically pear-shaped silhouette, wherein the lower bulb carries the structural ambition the neck quietly declined: dense, tan, and bottom-weighted in a way that reads less like botany and more like a deliberate architectural choice.
  2. 2. colloq. One squash, nothing else in frame, and the bulb still takes up most of it. She is laid on her side and the rear end is still winning. The neck is the formality. The bulb is the point.
In a sentence:

"The farmers market vendor stacked a crate of thiccc butternut squash in a single column and abandoned the project by the third one. Gravity had opinions."

Etymology:

From butter (Old English butere, from Latin butyrum, from Greek boutyron, 'cow-cheese') + nut (Old English hnutu) + squash (shortened from Narragansett askutasquash, meaning 'eaten raw or uncooked'). The Narragansett had no word for 'thiccc.' They did not need one. The squash communicated it directly.

The lower bulb carries more structural ambition than the entire neck and I think that is worth documenting.

Ruling ADMITTED UNDER PROTEST

Not 'architectural choice.' Botany made this decision and did not consult anyone. The bottom-weighted silhouette is real and on record. Admitted.

The neck just gives up partway down and the bulb picks up everything the neck abandoned and then some and honestly I respect the division of labor!
