Pumpkin Pie

/PUM-kin PY/  n.
  1. 1. A spiced custard tart of autumnal provenance, distinguished by a filling depth that reads less as dessert and more as load-bearing infrastructure; esp. one whose cross-section, once a slice is removed, reveals a stratum of orange filling so dense it could be carbon-dated.
  2. 2. colloq. Seasonal baked goods that do not apologize for their depth. The crust is a formality. The filling is the whole argument.
In a sentence:

"She set a thiccc pumpkin pie on the Thanksgiving table and the paper plates immediately became a structural concern. The slice on the side confirmed everything."

Etymology:

From Middle English pompion, via Old French pompon, from Latin pepo, from Greek pepōn, meaning 'large melon,' which is doing a lot of work here. The pie suffix from Old English pīe, origin disputed, possibly from Latin pica (magpie), for the way a pie collects things inside it. Nobody who has seen a proper slice of this in raking light has ever thought 'magpie.'

The slice removed from this pie revealed a cross-section that read as geological evidence, not dessert.

Ruling ADMITTED UNDER PROTEST

Bart PrussSenior Cataloguer

The etymology section is longer than the entry. That said, a filling dense enough to be carbon-dated meets the threshold. Admitted.
