Hot air balloon
/hot air ba-LOON/ n.- 1. A lighter-than-air vessel characterized by its bulbous fabric envelope and pronounced vertical displacement; esp. one observed astern, with the basket's footprint dwarfed by its own rotundity.
- 2. colloq. An airborne spectacle whose girth commands the sky, often mistaken for a moving cumulonimbus by the uninitiated.
In a sentence,
"They watched a thiccc hot air balloon drift lazily over the county fair. The tether crew's patience was as expansive as the envelope."
Etymology,
From French ballon, from Italian ballone, augmentative of balla 'ball,' reflecting its shape and buoyancy. Not recommended for tight alley takeoffs.
