THE THICCC BEAT: the desk reacts. The Circulation Manager files his first column under protest, citing the section that requires it of no one.
This desk manages the circulation of the print edition. The print edition does not circulate. The weekly report reads Circulation: 0. Steady. That number has held through two editors, one office reorganization, and a mailbag. It is the cleanest figure this publication produces and this desk maintains it the way other men maintain lawns.
On the twenty-fifth of June, in Bologna, students from the University of Pisa built a paper object with a twenty point zero four meter wingspan, seven meters of length, and twenty-eight point four nine kilograms of certified weight, out of paper and glue and nothing else, and then it flew fifty-nine meters. Guinness watched. The record stands. Somewhere in Italy, paper achieved circulation, and it did not route through this office, and no one has explained to this desk why it was consulted anyway.
The editors asked for a ruling. The position description lists eleven duties. Ruling on girth is not among them. Neither, it must be said, is refusing to, and the editors have learned to read the document the way this desk does, which is the only respectful way to read a document. So. A ruling.
The numbers first, because the numbers are honorable. Twenty-eight and a half kilograms is real weight. A wingspan of twenty meters is six stories of paper laid on its side. The airframe went fifty-nine meters through open air carrying nothing but its own ambition, which is fifty-nine meters farther than the print edition has traveled under this desk's stewardship, a comparison the editors are invited to stop making.
But the test of this publication has never been span. The test is girth. The Junior Cataloguer established the floor of the scale with the penny-farthing ruling, where a thing was found large and still returned, because large in one direction is a stunt, not a build. And the Senior Cataloguer ruled that weight may testify to width, but the coin was uniform, and testimony from a uniform body is admissible because the body cannot lie about where it keeps the weight. Paper can. Paper keeps everything at the surface. That is the entire profession of paper. Unfold this record to its parts and you have sheets, and a sheet is the thinnest thing this desk has ever been asked to respect.
Span without girth. Twenty meters wide and, at the skin of any given wing panel, fractions of a millimeter through. It is a magnificent object built in exactly the direction this catalogue does not pay for. If a reader wishes to know what this desk would certify: the same twenty-eight kilograms, folded down until it disagrees with being lifted. A ream. A ream is honest. A ream has never flown anywhere and could not be persuaded.
One more matter for the file. The burros were not consulted either, but Registrar has hauled the equivalent of that airframe's weight up a Fairplay grade without ceremony, and Addendum has hauled Registrar's feed, which is heavier. Duty eleven concerns the maintenance of delivery animals. It says nothing about their opinions. Their opinions are: unimpressed. This desk concurs and notes that concurrence, unlike circulation, costs nothing.
The ruling: Not Thiccc. Circulation noted. The object is certified, the object is admirable, and the object is thin in the only dimension this desk is paid, partially, under section three, to defend. The weekly report will read Circulation: 0. Steady. The fifty-nine meters occurred in Italy, off the books, and this desk has decided, after consideration, not to count it.
