Something Eleven Feet Across Came Down in Minnesota and Waited Six Weeks to Be Noticed

THE THICCC BEAT: the desk reacts. Our Field Correspondent files from the edge of a cornfield he was asked, twice, not to enter.
I am writing this from the shoulder of a gravel road in Scott Township, Stevens County, Minnesota, about a hundred and forty miles northwest of Minneapolis, and the corn out here has been cut down to stubble, which is the only reason any of us know about her.
The facts, as the Stevens County Sheriff's Office posted them. At about half past three on Wednesday the fourteenth, deputies answered a call about "foreign debris" in a field. They found a "large, metallic object, approximately 11-feet in diameter, presumably a space object." Charred. No danger to the public. State and federal agencies were called in to find the owner and plan her removal, which is a sentence I have only ever seen applied to ships and to my last landlord.
She was found by a farmer bringing in the corn. The astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell told AccuWeather she could be part of the upper stage of a Zhuque-2E, a Chinese rocket whose upper stage came back down over this part of the world in mid-September. Gizmodo did the arithmetic: she had likely been lying in that field for about six weeks. Six weeks. Eleven feet of round metal, fresh from orbit, and she sat in the rows with the patience of a cathedral bell and told no one.
I have stood in the Hambach pit at dawn. I have watched a supertanker take forty minutes to turn. I have never seen anything with this much discretion.
Now, the catalogue's question, which is never how big. Big is a Facilities matter, as Operations reminded us on Tuesday. The question is curves. And here I have to be honest with the desk, because Bart will check: "eleven feet in diameter" tells us she is round in at least one direction. It does not tell us what she does from the side. The sheriff's photograph shows a damaged metal shape in yellowed stalks, and the corn is not saying anything either.
What I can file is the circumstantial case. Eleven feet across. Came in hot. Took the fall and kept her shape well enough that the deputies reached for the word "diameter" before they reached for anything else. You do not say "diameter" about a flat thing. You say it about a thing with a middle.
The ruling: Provisional. Eleven feet across and round, but nobody has seen her good side yet. Filed under Vehicles, Orbital, Arrived Unannounced. The catalogue will revisit when the agencies lift her out of that field and someone finally gets a look at her from behind.
Spider Hennessy files from rotating cities. This week the city is a cornfield. His expense report has already arrived, correctly formatted.
